BIOGRAPHY

Born in Bern, Switzerland in 1957, Thomas Hirschhorn is a graphic design major who switched to visual arts around 1986. His digitally altered photographs and "photomontages" are usually graphic, somewhat disturbing and sometimes contain nudity or body parts that are both real and fake. Seeing nudity in artwork usually catches the eye of viewers because it is surprising and not seen in public very often. The earlier stages of his career featured artworks that expressed powerful political messages. Despite this, his artworks always spark the interest of viewers whether they agree with the message or not. He is known for displaying public art as well as detailed elaborate exhibits that focus on political and social societal concerns in the world today. He is very abstract and focuses much of his work on Global issues including war, torture, vulnerability, and weaknesses. His mediums are very diverse and use objects such as fake body parts, tape, cardboard, fabric linens, paint, and many more. The range of options available to the sculptors of the postermodern era have never been larger. There are no rules to the techniques and materials used today as you can see in Thomas Hirschhorn's work. His work can be viewed as one of the most diverse for the time. He uses great mediums to explore the symbolic value of shapes. The most symbolic of sculptural subjects is still the human body and Hirschhorn uses that to express a great deal of emotionality and expressiveness in his works. His works are so massive that they tend to expand outdoors as well and creates public works of art. Please take a look at the extradinary works of Thomas Hirschhorn. Please be aware Hirschhorn's work expands into several galleries rooms to create the entire exhibit.

Hirschhorn takes advantage of main space and transforms it into a dramatic scene symbolizing a war-like battle. It also shows determination to win back faith, love, hope and peace in the destructive world we live in. Use of manikin body parts are of great plenty in this work of art.
